Proxy Servers: One Method To Unblocking Websites On My School Computer
Schools and other institutions often block undesirable websites from being able to be viewed in available browsers for a number of reasons. Websites like YouTube.com, MySpace or FaceBook can all be a distraction from education time and focus. Sites like these can also contain content that is considered inappropriate and rather than installing complex filters it is easier to block the entire URL or website address. This way if you try to go to any page under a domain name it will be blocked.
There are a number of methods one can use to try and circumvent such security measures. One that works particularly well and is quite simple to use is by making use of a proxy server. Proxy means ‘placeholder’ or ‘taking the place of’, so a proxy server is a computer server that takes the place of another server or computer. Setting up a proxy server can be a bit of a task and not feasible for a good number of people. Not too worry, there are proxy servers already setup and available for use on the Internet.
Publicproxyservers.com lists a whole bunch of proxy servers, a good number of which are free. You can simply go to one of the servers website and surf through their server. The way this works is like opening a window within a window. You open your schools browser and go to a proxy website that is not blocked. On the proxy’s website there will usually be an input box where you can type in a URL or website address like youtub.com and it will take you there from the window within a window. There are a couple of drawbacks to this method. One being that Java Script often doesn’t work. This is important if you want to do anything that requires Java to work. However, this proxy method is very simple and easy. |
